Welcome back to the University after what I hope was a relaxing and enjoyable summer break.
As we start a new academic year, I would like to thank all those who worked during the clearing process and throughout the year to ensure we meet our quota of students for the year ahead. As a result of this hard work, we are cautiously optimistic about enrolments for 2009/10.
I would like to extend my congratulations to our many talented postgraduate students for some excellent work which has been on display at the University. This year's MA shows are a testament to the hard work of our students and staff.
I was also delighted to hear that VADS have been successful in bids for funding under the Enhancing Digital Resources stream of the JISC e-Content Capital Programme, as well as funding to organise a seminar on the process of digitisation and the difficulties and obstacles associated with it.
Towards the end of last term you may have noted the government's announcement on increased university places that were limited to science. technology, engineering and maths subjects alone. Through an op-ed article in the Guardian and a letter to the Times Higher, as well as a personal letter to the Business Secretary Lord Mandelson about this matter, UCA led the argument for increased support of the creative industries and creative subjects. I hope that this pressure on government re-iterates the importance of our subjects in taking Britain out of a recession and the need for government to support the efforts of our sector to do so.
As we look to future horizons and ways that the UCA community can grow and develop, I am proud to announce that the Strood Academy, of which we are the lead sponsor, opened its doors to students on 1 September for the start of the new school term. UCA will continue to work closely with Principal Richard Hart to help ensure the success of the Academy. You can read more about the Academy in this edition of the staff ezine.
My thanks to staff for responding to the survey on the effectiveness of roadshows. In response to feedback we will be reviewing the process and will be piloting some new communication mechanisms in the months ahead.
Lastly I hope you enjoy this edition of the ezine, and extend a warm welcome to you as you return for a new academic year. I am sure it will be an exciting and rewarding year for us all.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Elaine Thomas
