ucreative update

Professor Elaine Thomas

It is now a year since the Privy Council granted us University title and we should not underestimate the progress we have made in just a year. I am pleased to report that, thanks to the detailed work of many colleagues, we have gained the full backing and commitment from the Board of Governors for our sponsorship of the Strood Academy in Medway, which will significantly enhance our outreach work in the community, raising the aspirations of young people to go to university.

I am also delighted that our Marketing Team received the prestigious Gold Award in the Marketer of the Year category at the HEIST Awards in May. The team has also been shortlisted for the THE Leadership & Management Awards in the category of Outstanding Marketing/ Communications Team and our Library and Learning Services team has been shortlisted for the same awards in the category of Outstanding Library Team.

I know that the year has been a challenging one, also. Our restructuring exercise, which will yield long term benefits in quality of service and effectiveness, has resulted in some difficult choices and created an unsettled climate for many people.

Despite the hard decisions the University has had to make, we shouldn't forget that we are very much at the start of a long process of growth and development – a theme I have been discussing at the executive roadshows.

In just a few months we will be holding our first ever graduation ceremony as a full university, with this year's students being the first to graduate from the University for the Creative Arts.

This time of year brings many successes and reasons for celebration as our students conclude their studies and present their work to the public. I look forward to viewing the huge range of exhibitions and congratulate staff on their achievements in supporting our students and ensuring the high standards that we are proud to maintain.
