Equality and Diversity – what's it all about?
Equality is about creating a fairer society in which everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Diversity is about recognising and valuing difference in its broadest sense.
The Equality and Diversity (E&D) Committee oversees the operation of our E&D policies in relation to staff, students and visitors in order to ensure that all staff and students are aware of their rights and responsibilities under equalities legislation and embed equality within all its activities.
How does it do this?
You might be surprised to find out who attends the committee meetings (held three times a year). The chair is the Vice-Chancellor who appoints an Executive Dean and five staff representatives (one from each campus). There are also representatives from HR, Estates, Quality and Standards, Teaching and Learning and Marketing and Communications together with SU and Trades Union Representatives and a member of the Board of Governors.
What's been on the agenda over the past year?
Items have included: harassment and bullying review, Investors in People, the diversity on-line module, forum theatre training (fairness and equity), annual reports such as E&D monitoring report, E&D overview report.
Five key items from the E&D committee in November 08:
· The committee reviews its effectiveness annually.
· The committee heard that meetings to review the Gender Equality Scheme had taken place – more information to be presented at next EDC.
· The amended Harassment & Bullying Policy sent out to EDC members/Union representatives and the Harassment & Bullying working group. Estimated time scale for completion: Spring 2009.
· Disability Equality Scheme action plan – queries raised about size of font and layout of UCA prospectus. Action for EDA to meet with marketing and see the final draft before it went to print.
· Action for staff to work with Students' Union on events that students and staff could both participate in.
