Animation graduate wins Oscar nomination
UCA Farnham graduate Adam Foulkes is one half of the directing duo at leading London animation studio, Nexus, whose short film 'This Way Up' was nominated for the Best Animated Short Film Category at this year's Oscars.
'This Way Up' made with fellow animator Alan Smith and the creative team at Nexus, is about two undertakers on a surreal journey to deliver a coffin to be buried.
Adam Foulkes graduated with a BA Hons Animation from Farnham and in 1995 won a place at the Royal College of Art where he teamed up with Alan Smith.
Since joining Nexus in 1997, they have developed a reputation as one of London's leading animation directing duos.
Their commercial work has won them numerous awards including the Grand Prix Award at Cannes Lions, an ITV Award for Best Commercial and two Golds at the D&AD awards. They were the most awarded commercial directors in the US and Europe in 2006 for the Honda "Grrr" spot. They also worked on the film title sequence for Thunderbirds.
Animation Lecturer Roger Noake remembers Adam as a student at Farnham. He said: "Adam stood out as a student for his high quality of drawing and a professional approach to his studies.
"Companies in industry often relay to us how well our graduates work in teams, you have no better example than Adam who has set up a company and done so well with a friend."
Adam Foulkes said: "It's great that the nomination has got the film out to a much wider audience and it's already opened a few doors for us. It was really made as a stepping stone to producing a feature film."
La Maison en Petits Cubes directed by Kunio Kato won the Oscar, but Adam was not too dissappointed. He added: " It was very exciting to be nominated. I was really just looking forward to the show and the goodie bag."
