As we enter 2009, we do so with the recent results of the Research Assessment Exercise as another string to our bow. We can all take great pride in the research that has been generated across the university over the past few years. 65% of 192 unique research submissions to the Art and Design unit of assessment were described as internationally recognised or above including 5% in highest range of 'world leading.' Our research centres can be very proud of their excellent research output in recent years. I would like to add my congratulations and thanks to all staff who were involved in supporting research across the University.
Each new year brings its different challenges and opportunities. This year many UK industries including our own will have to respond to the challenges of a difficult economic climate and the continued need for higher standards. Despite these challenges, there is always something refreshing about the start to a new year. We are gifted with an opportunity for reflection and a renewed focus. Whether you are teaching our students directly, or providing support to university life in so many different ways, this is an opportunity to continue to do so with new energy and purpose.
I wish you a very happy, healthy new year in which we can all continue to work towards our vision for the future.
