A new term a BRAND new refectory, catch up with the bright sparks behind the new look...
Introducing two new Governors, Pauline Tambling and Alun Jones
By Professor Elaine Thomas, Rector
Staff have been working hard to produce an Institutional Briefing Paper to inform the QAA Institutional Audit, and this was concluded and submitted in August.
The purpose of the Audit is to allow the Audit team to demonstrate:
The confidence that can reasonably be placed in the soundness of the Institution's present and likely future management of the academic standards of its awards
The confidence that can reasonably be placed in the soundness of the Institution's present and likely future management of the quality of the learning opportunities available to students
The audit takes the form of two visits to the University. The first, on the10-12th September, was a briefing visit, involving meetings with the Rector, staff with institutional responsibility for matters relating to quality and standards, (mostly chairs, secretaries and members of relevant committees) and student representatives. The second visit takes place during the week commencing October 15th and provides an opportunity for the team to pursue in greater depth the lines of enquiry that it identified at the briefing visit; to extend its study of the Institution's documentation relating to the management of quality and standards; to meet particular groups of staff and students; and generally to explore the focuses of audit identified.
The outcome of the audit should be known in January 2008, and the preliminary findings, which will be communicated to us earlier, will help to inform our submission for University Title in December.
There will be an opportunity to find out more about the Institutional Audit at the Strategic Plan Roadshows.
A summary of the Strategic Plan 2006-2011, which has been reviewed and updated for 2007/2008, will be available via the staff portal. Hard copies will also be distributed at the Roadshows. The Roadshows will each consist of a 30min presentation by myself, followed by up to an hour of questions and answers to Executive relating to the presentation and further issues staff would like to raise.
For staff who are unable to make it to any off the Roadshows or for those of you with further questions a special email contact address has been created for you. Please do not hesitate to send your questions and comments to:
Those staff who attended the Strategic Plan Roadshows will know that work has started on the development of a Sustainability Plan for the University. The project to produce the Plan is being managed by Alan Cooke, the Acting Pro Rector Corporate Resources. Below Alan gives an outline of what the process entails and the objectives of the Plan.
All staff are invited to attend presentations, which will be given by Executive, presenting a 'user friendly' version of the University Strategic Plan 2006-11.
Did you know that, from the 2007-08 academic year, all University staff have the possibility to apply for a funded visit to one of our European exchange partners?

The two-year project to implement a single Library Management System (LMS) across all five sites was successfully completed, on time and on budget, on the 23rd July. This unites the Library catalogues and introduces new functionalities to support teaching, learning and research at the University.
You may recall that in the last edition of UCreative I posted an article on the RAE2008 and University Title, in this edition I wanted to focus on the components of the submission and progress to date.
